Professor Khalilullah Khalili, the former Poet Laureate of Afghanistan, was born in 1907, and died in 1987. The author of more than twenty works on the subjects of history, literature and philosophy, he was a government official, a professor of literature, as well as holding the post of Afghan ambassador to Iraq and Saudi Arabia. Writing in Persian, his style was traditional with perfect rhyme and regular metre. This selection of Khalili’s Quatrains is presented with a trilingual text, in English, Persian and Arabic, and touches on the themes of love, beauty, and mysticism.
